During this month of March Madness, I wanted to take some basketball pictures. This quote by Wayne Gretzky, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" is one of my favorites and I thought this image portrayed it pretty well. The basketball is upside down and I could have fixed it but I think it makes it look more authentic.
My son wanted me to capture a cool shot of him swishing the basketball. He picked this shot and I think it is a great one showing the net and ball perfectly. It took about 100 shots to get my camera to the settings I wanted and the basketball frozen in time. These images were taken outside in the backyard on a basket attached to our garage. I positioned myself against the garage and tried to keep it out of the shot as best I could. I also stood on a big can of paint just to get higher so the power lines wouldn't run through the rim. My camera settings were: aperture: f/4.5 shutter speed: 1/1600 ISO: 400 I used my multi shot setting (continuous drive) on the camera and got around 6 shots at a time. I kept missing the ball coming out of the net so I could have used one or two additional burst shots. Using a fast shutter speed ensured a sharp ball and net. I focused near the bottom of the net before the shot was taken so the ball would be in focus. |
What I Learned...
- A fast shutter speed is essential for a sharp image
- Focusing on the net helped keep the ball in focus
